We then need to formally appraise those assets to determine their current market value. This information is documented on specific court forms (DE-160/161) and submitted for the court’s review. Ordinarily, this step involves collaboration with appraisers, accountants, and sometimes even specialized professionals depending on the nature of the assets.
Finding a forgotten safety deposit box key tucked away in a drawer or discovering an old investment account can significantly impact the estate’s value. Conversely, failing to locate and include all assets could lead to disputes later on.
I remember one case where we unearthed a rare stamp collection that the family was unaware of, ultimately adding considerable value to the estate. Moments like these highlight the importance of thoroughness during this stage.

Absolutely. Locating assets can sometimes be like piecing together a puzzle, especially when dealing with complex financial arrangements or long-forgotten accounts. Moreover, disagreements can arise among family members about the value of certain items, particularly sentimental possessions.
I once worked on a case where siblings disagreed vehemently over the value of their late mother’s antique furniture. We ultimately resolved the matter through mediation and appraisal by an independent expert.
