Reporter: Welcome to our program today. We’re joined by Steve Bliss, a well-known probate attorney here in San Diego. Steve, thanks for being with us.
Steve Bliss: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Reporter: Today we want to discuss the crucial process of estate planning. Could you walk our viewers through one of the key steps involved?
Steve Bliss: Certainly. One fundamental step in estate planning is determining your goals and objectives. This involves reflecting on what you want to accomplish with your assets after you’re gone. Ordinarily, people prioritize providing for their loved ones, such as spouses, children, or other dependents.
Moreover, some individuals may have charitable aspirations and wish to leave a portion of their estate to a cause they believe in. Clearly defining these goals is essential because it will guide the entire estate planning process. For example, if your primary goal is to ensure your children’s financial security, you might choose to establish trusts that provide for their education or living expenses.
Conversely, if charitable giving is a priority, you might designate specific organizations as beneficiaries in your will. Consequently, having well-defined goals allows us to craft an estate plan tailored to your unique wishes and circumstances.
Reporter: I can see how important it is to have clarity on those objectives. Have you ever encountered any challenges in helping clients determine their goals?
Steve Bliss: Sometimes, yes. It’s not always easy for people to confront their mortality and make these decisions. I recall working with a gentleman who was hesitant to create a will because he found the topic uncomfortable. He feared upsetting his family by discussing his passing. We had several conversations where I gently emphasized the importance of providing for his loved ones and ensuring a smooth transition after he was gone.
Ultimately, he realized that creating a will was an act of love and care, not something to be dreaded. According to a survey conducted by Caring.com, 60% of Americans do not have a will. This highlights the importance of raising awareness about estate planning and encouraging people to take proactive steps.
Reporter: That’s a powerful example. Thank you for sharing that. What advice would you give to our viewers who are considering starting the estate planning process?
Steve Bliss: My advice is to start sooner rather than later. Estate planning isn’t just for wealthy individuals; it’s essential for everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Moreover, don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance from an experienced probate attorney. They can help you navigate the complexities of the process and ensure that your wishes are carried out accurately.
